Privacy Policy

8TEN (8ten.cloud) is a hosted web application developed and maintained by Water and Environment Solutions (WNE). In this document, 8TEN is also referred to as "the Service."

This Privacy Policy explains how WNE (“we”, “our”, “us”), as the owner and operator of the 8TEN platform (“8TEN” or “the Service”), handles information when providing water, power, and utility data management services.

We act primarily as a data processor on behalf of our clients (such as utilities, landlords, and property managers), who are the data controllers responsible for deciding how personal data is used.

This Privacy Policy applies to our website and mobile apps for iPhone and Android devices (collectively, the "Service"). By accessing or using our Service, you signify that you have read, understood, and agree to our collection, storage, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.

In the event our site contains links to third-party sites and services, please be aware that those sites and services have their own privacy policies. After following a link to any third-party content, you should read their posted privacy policy information about how they collect and use personal information. This Privacy Policy does not apply to any of your activities after you leave our site.

1. Who This Policy Applies To

Having said that, a privacy policy is a statement that discloses some or all of the ways a website collects, uses, discloses, processes, and manages the data of its visitors and customers. It usually also includes a statement regarding the website’s commitment to protecting its visitors’ or customers’ privacy, and an explanation about the different mechanisms the website is implementing in order to protect privacy. 

 

Different jurisdictions have different legal obligations of what must be included in a Privacy Policy. You are responsible to make sure you are following the relevant legislation to your activities and location.

2. Information We Process

When you use 8TEN, we process different categories of data:

  • Utility & Meter Data: device (such as water, power, gas meter and sensor) information, device readings, timestamps, and usage patterns.

  • Account Data: tenant information, identifiers such as unit numbers, service addresses, account IDs, tenant/customer names (as provided by the utility or property manager).

  • Operational Data: alerts, notifications (e.g. leaks, outages, anomalies), user action, billing data.

  • System & Support Data: login credentials, usage logs, error reports, and communications with our support team.

  • We may receive information from identity verification services or other third parties.

We do not sell personal data to third parties.

3. Purpose of Processing

We process data to:

  • Provide contracted services to our clients (meter reading, billing, reporting, tenant portals).

  • Maintain and secure the 8TEN platform.

  • Monitor usage to detect faults, leaks, or irregularities.

  • Support utilities and property managers in managing their operations.

  • Provide customer support and respond to inquiries.

4. Use of Cookies and Tracking Technologies

  • Get notified before accepting a cookie

  • Disable or delete existing cookies

  • Reject all cookies (note: this may impair functionality)

Some mobile devices may limit cookie blocking options. Email settings may be configured to block image downloads that contain tracking elements.

We use a cookie consent banner to obtain your consent before setting non-essential cookies.

We do not sell personal information to third parties. We do not share your information for cross-context behavioral advertising without consent.

6. Data Subject Rights

If you are an end-user (tenant, customer, or resident), you may have rights under privacy laws, including the right to:

  • Access your personal data.

  • Correct or update your data.

  • Request deletion or restriction of processing.

  • Object to certain types of processing.

  • Request a copy of your data (portability).

Because WNE acts as a data processor, requests to exercise these rights should be directed to your utility provider, landlord, or property manager (the data controller). We will support them in responding to valid requests.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal data for as long as necessary to provide services or comply with legal requirements.

Once data is no longer needed, it will be securely deleted or anonymized.

8. Children’s Privacy

8TEN is not intended for use by children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Users under 18 can request deletion or anonymization of content posted to the Service. We will make commercially reasonable efforts, though complete deletion may not always be possible (e.g., reposting by others).

9. Third-Party Tracking and Advertising

We may allow third-party services to collect usage data via cookies for advertising and analytics purposes. These partners may use hashed data or device identifiers to serve relevant ads across sites and devices.

No system is completely secure. If a breach occurs, we will take reasonable steps to investigate and notify affected parties, including your employer where applicable.

11. International Data Transfers

Your data may be stored and processed in any country where we or our service providers operate. We implement safeguards for international data transfers, consistent with applicable privacy laws.

We may disclose personal information:

  • To comply with legal obligations (subpoena, court order)

  • To enforce Terms of Service

  • To protect the rights, property, or safety of users or the public

  • To detect or prevent fraud, security, or technical issues

We may update this Policy periodically. When we do, the "Last Revised" date will be updated. Continued use of the Service after changes indicates your consent.
